15 Minutes… The Great British Spring Clean

Mar 2, 2023 | Featured Articles, Interviews

Just one bag of rubbish can make a huge difference. In 2022, that one bag of rubbish per person led to almost 500,000 bags of rubbish being removed from our communities in total across the UK.

Now in its eighth year, the campaign, organised by Keep Britain Tidy, asks for local residents to join forces with local businesses – big and small – trusts, community groups and local councils and come on board as a Litter Hero to raise that bar.

Clean Devon is a partnership of organisations working together in Devon year-round to tackle fly tipping and general littering, and will be backing the event again this year. For advice on how to get started locally, visit www.cleandevon.org

Pride of Place
The ultimate goal is to restore the pride of where we live. People of all ages are encouraged to get active and into the outdoors to help clear up rubbish around them and, in turn, grow strength of community and respect for the places we call home.

Get Involved
Together we can make a difference and clean up the environment on our doorstep.

You can join in by litter-picking by yourself or with friends and family, or by joining an organised event or group happening near you. The campaign page has a handy map of what’s on – just enter your postcode to discover events nearby: www.keepbritaintidy.org

Every local authority has different preferences around what you should do with litter collected. If you do plan to collect a large amount, speak to your local council ahead of your activity to get advice about what to do with it. Of course make sure to separate recyclable waste from non-recyclable where possible. More advice on litter picking safely can be found on the Keep Britain Tidy website.

Feeling Adventurous?
The more adventurous of you may like to combine litter-picking with sightseeing, exercise or both.

Wayne Dixon is one such example, taking part in a previous Great British Spring Clean in spectacular fashion by walking and litter-picking his way around the 7,500 miles of Britain’s coastline accompanied by his dog, Koda – all while raising money for Mind in the process. It’s a cause dear to his heart and Koda’s, as Koda nearly lost a leg when he was injured by a discarded can. You may not have a few years to spare to follow in Wayne’s footsteps, but a shorter coastal excursion could make for a fun day out while giving back.

Become a Litter Hero
Join the challenge and reap the rewards of a more positive environment. Find out how you can join in and log your litter picking at www.keepbritaintidy.org/get-involved/support-our-campaigns/great-british-spring-clean
