50 Years of the South West Coast Path

Mar 2, 2023 | Featured Articles, Interviews

630 miles of diverse, spectacular and rugged footpath frame our beloved South West peninsula. Over 200 of those miles reside within Devon! Whether you’re an endurance walker or casual stroller, step by step, this iconic trail introduces you to characterful coastal towns and villages, and off-grid secret sandy beaches and coves – each with their own unique history and biodiversity to discover.

Walking the entire South West Coast Path (SWCP) is equivalent to scaling Mount Everest four times thanks to 115,000ft of ascent and descent utilising over 30,000 steps, 880 gates and 13 ferries!

It’s no wonder it’s an adventure that many of us have somewhere on our bucket list. So how can you enjoy it? And how can we ensure it’s protected?

As one of the largest visitor attractions in the South West, this completely free outdoor asset is incredibly important to protect. This is handled by the SWCP Association – a team of dedicated staff, volunteers and fundraisers who give their time and money to meet and deliver the £1,000 per mile cost per year to maintain. Established in 2013, this registered charity manages and champions Britain’s longest walking route to improve access for all.

Get Yourself a Coast Path Passport
Inspired by the world-famous Camino de Santiago Pilgrim Trail in Northern Spain, which encourages walkers to collect stamps as they make their way to the finish destination, the SWCP Association have created a new passport scheme to create a unique and official record of your journey along this iconic route. Get yours for just £6.50 from the online shop and get collecting your stamps – each reflecting the heritage of the natural area – from designated way maker businesses along the way.

Join in the Celebration
From photography exhibitions to the launch of a new monthly podcast series on Spotify (630 Miles – An Audio Journey) meeting the volunteers and amazing people who have completed the entire route, there are several ways that SWCP lovers can get involved in the local area. The main event is The 50th Anniversary Trailblazer Walk – an epic relay of walks along the full 630-mile route. Every day between 12th May – 15th June, walkers are invited to join a free morning or afternoon guided walk on routes from between 6 and 18 miles. Booking is essential and spaces are limited.
