West Down View Circular Walk
Orientate yourself at the western end of Northview Road near to the entrance of East Devon Golf Club. (1) From here, walk along Northview Road and turn right just before Sherbrook Hill, walking down a lane and past a unique house covered entirely in mosaic tiles. Continue straight to reach the South West Coast Path – here you’ll be able to immediately soak up some of the dramatic coastline views.
(2) Turn right to follow the coast path as it wiggles through woodland, past a small brook, and begins to climb steadily. Watch out for exposed roots under foot.
It’s a continuous, steady climb for the next ¾ mile as you embark on this unusual section of coast path. The pine woodland and rooty path gently merges into heathland and sandy pebblebeds as you border the ancient East Devon Pebblebed Heaths area of outstanding natural beauty.
Stop and utilise the benches for rest if needs be, or simply to turn around and admire the view back down the coast towards Budleigh Salterton.
You’ll soon reach the high point at West Down View, giving you a fabulous perspective to admire the Devon Cliffs jutting out in front of you, with Littleham Cove in the near distance and a view of Exmouth and the Exe Estuary beyond.
(3) Turn right here, at the signpost directing you towards Knowle and off the coast path. It’s mostly downhill from here. Continue on this path until you reach a sign on the boundary of the golf course.
(4) Be mindful of golfers and take the path bearing slightly right to begin with, towards the marker post, before heading straight towards the trees, keeping them to your right as you continue.
(5) Turn right and follow the tractor track, crossing the golf course again. Continue on this track for approximately 250 yards before taking the signposted path on the left.
(6) Go through the gate and follow the path through the field, admiring the view over Budleigh Salterton ahead.
(7) Turn right onto Littleham Church Path (a historic route important to Littleham Parish from which Exmouth developed) and follow the route across another tee box, and then down through the woodland taking you to the main Exmouth Road. (8) From here, turn right to walk up the short but steep Links Road and you’ll return back to Northview Road where you began.
