Amelia’s Restaurant
“A love letter to local produce.” A thought-provoking statement that speaks volumes from newly appointed executive chef, Richard King, who is transforming the dining experience with his new menu at Amelia’s Restaurant.
There’s a new challenge for Richard and his team, together with long-term family owners of over 40 years. Rather than Amelia’s just appealing to those holidaying from afar due to its Cofton Holidays location, the aim is to become the go-to place for local people to enjoy local food.
Richard has experience working at Michelin-starred restaurants, has represented the UK at international level, and closer to home has worked alongside Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall at River Cottage.
Discussing his new, seasonal menu, Richard told us: “I want to create a field to fork experience. We have so many fantastic producers and suppliers here in Devon, why would we want to import a single ingredient?”
It’s true.
Using the freshest, finest ingredients with the lowest food miles possible, it’s also about celebrating and working together as a county of exquisite food and drink. Partnering suppliers include Forest Fungi in Dawlish Warren, Goosemoore in Topsham, Kingfisher Fishmongers in Brixham and Panino Bakery of Newton Abbot.
“Get the finest ingredients, and my job becomes very easy”, Richard says modestly.
Signature dishes include the beautifully tender and flavourful Devon Red cider infused crispy pork belly, an earthy Forest Fungi and Truffle Risotto, and comforting classics like the Cofton Smash Burger. Special shout out to the incredible roasted spatchcock chicken with celeriac and apple remoulade, and a wholegrain mustard sauce that was able to subtly deliver its flavour without overwhelming the tastebuds.
Gluten-free alternatives of most dishes are available, including a gluten-free batter that is so good that it’s used to replace all regular batter.
What seemed like a challenge for Amelia’s is actually the ace up its sleeve. Its location creates a holiday at home event.
Pair your foodie venture with some fantastic, family-friendly activities. The tree top adventure high ropes course (suitable for children 8+) offers a dose of adrenaline, while swimming pools, soft play, outdoor play and even wet play add to the fun. Why not hire an e-bike for the day and explore the forest or coastal cycle trails?
A hearty breakfast menu allows you to book-end a jam-packed day and special deals for low-cost children’s meals entice families further. More-than-just-Sunday carveries and outdoor food events are in the works too – watch this space.
What’s more, sustainability commitment beyond food suppliers helps towards self-sufficiency, with a biomass energy source on site and copious solar panels providing power.
Experience Amelia’s for yourself and embark on, as they say, ‘a proper taste of Devon’.
