Go Here… Lundy Island

All aboard the traditional MS Oldenburg – destination: Lundy Island.

Built in 1958, this graceful ferry and supply ship equipped with original brass and wooden fittings, saloon, bar and even a buffet, is an experience in its own right before arriving at this unforgettable destination.

Crossings sail multiple times per week from Bideford and Ilfracombe (via a smaller boat), where in just two hours you’ll see the towering cliffs and lighthouse come into view.

The island, only three miles long and half a mile wide, is a designated Marine Conservation Zone, home to some spectacular and rare wildlife. Find seals basking on the rocky shores and a variety of birds which migrate here. The stars of the show are the magnificent puffins – the birds to which Lundy gets its name (the Norse word Lund meaning Puffin). They can be found on the dramatic western coast as they return to the nesting sites between April and July – truly a sight to behold. Further on, wild Soay Sheep and Sika Deer can be found grazing in their natural habitats.

History exists here in abundance. Over 40 scheduled monuments tell the rich and varied story of life here since the Bronze and Iron Ages. Each discovery puts together the pieces of history to tell the story of how the island has changed over almost 4,000 years of inhabitants.

Walkers will enjoy exploring the island on foot via well-marked paths taking you to all the iconic landmarks. A must-stop is the iconic, Georgian Lundy Lighthouse which offers panoramic views and, en-route, the ruins of the 13th century St. Helen’s Church. A former slate quarry in this area also provides a glimpse into the island’s past.

Warm back up before your boat ride home in the island’s only pub – the Marisco Tavern. It’s the only building on the island that has lighting after the generators shut down for the night, and offers traditional simplicity and a carnivorous self-sufficient feast, as well as an array of vegetarian specialties. Just avoid the Lundy Cabbage (despite the name – it’s inedible)!

Day trips run April – October and book up in advance. You can book your day trip by phone on 01271 863636 or online via www.landmarktrust.org.uk/lundyisland
