Herbies, Exeter
Herbies is one of Exeter’s stalwart independent restaurants, welcoming generations of in-the-know locals for almost 35 years.
It’s been ahead of its time for decades, positioning itself as a welcome home for local vegetarians and vegans to come and enjoy delicious food in an inclusive setting.
Yet, despite serving patrons in the city (and many beyond) for so many years, you’d be forgiven for not knowing of Herbies’ existence.
Hidden away from the High Street lies Herbies’ humble purple exterior. Even those who pass by may miss its modest façade. But when you clock the glass frontage and peer a little closer inside, you’re met with a sense of intrigue that instantly builds into a warm and inviting buzz.
Step inside and Herbies’ calm yet vibrant atmosphere comes alive. It’s a cosy space where diners of all ages and backgrounds are intertwined, hosted by casual, friendly serving staff who welcome you with a smile. Plenty of plants and greenery add life to a sophisticated but homely interior, with fairy lights adding further warmth.
A varied menu offers plenty of hearty food options and, as you’d expect, is a far cry from having to settle for the only vegetarian or vegan option on the menu. ‘Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve actually had to make a choice,’ said one of our party. Who can share that sentiment?
Here you’ll find mouthwatering platters and sharing boards – made up of fresh focaccia and ciabattas and accompanied with tzatziki, houmous, salsa verde, mixed olives, balsamic and more – as well as sandwiches and wraps for those looking for something lighter, and an extensive selection of main meals and desserts.
Don’t miss the fragrant Kari Sayur – a Malaysian inspired curry with yellow split peas, butternut squash and served with sticky rice, or the robust jackfruit beet & bean burger served with either jacket wedges or a trio of the day’s salads. Specials are available too – we picked the sweet potato soul bowl which was colourful, flavourful and unbelievably filling!
Heron Valley will keep your palate refreshed with their juices and soft drinks, and a range of organic and natural wines are available alongside local ales and ciders.
Herbies is also a great spot for those who are gluten-free with the majority of menu options being gluten-free or able to alter for a gluten-free option.
Show your support for what is perhaps our city’s oldest indie restaurant. With a welcoming environment whatever your food preferences, and fantastic food to match, we’d love to see Herbies go another three decades.
